What do you get when you mix the message of Torah with pounding dancehall grooves?
The answer: A truly unique brand of music in the form of Matisyahu.
Matisyahu, (born Matthew Miller) is a 24-year-old reggae phenom unlike any other artist before him. With the looks of the traditional Lubavitcher of Crown Heights and the skanking sounds of Bob Marley, Matisyahu is a little hard to make sense of at first. A reggae Chasid? "Seems too weird to be true," was my first impression. How could this be any good?
For those of you who are seeing JVibe for the first time, let's rewind for a sec. Our initial petition for a Jewish Grammy has been denied, but a strong re-appeal is in the works. Matisyahu's (Truth, May/June 2006) new album No Place to Be comes out in stores on December 26th. The disc contains 7 new songs and includes a Live in Israel DVD that was shot in Tel Aviv in December, 2005. Matisyahu will also be performing "The First Annual Festival of Light" concert series at Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City this winter. He will be joined by his band, Roots Tonic, with a different opening act each night on Dec. 16, 17 & 19.
We know you're sitting on the edge of your seat, biting your nails, wondering who took the cake in this year's JVibe Music Awards. We watched each artist's fan base mobilize and change the polls almost hourly. We sweated as newer artists gave Matisyahu and Miri Ben-Ari a run for their talent. We covered our eyes as Rick Recht and Danny Nichols battled it out for the Lifetime Achievement Award. It took all month, but after tallying over 1,300 votes, we're ready to present the best of the best.
