All for a Few Perfect Waves, a new book by Jewish author David Rensin, is a biography of Miki Dora, a revolutionary surfer who looked at surfing as a lifestyle rather than a sport. He was a man alone on a wave with no cares or responsibilities, living pure existentialism defined by the tides. Dora didn’t want a job or a family, just the waves. Yet ironically, total freedom did not bring him happiness. Dora used his friends, was disloyal in his relationships and died as a lonely and tragic figure. Many of his friends grew up, held jobs and raised families; their surfing became a hobby. For Dora though, surfing remained the defining essence of his life. He fought so hard to correspond with the waves that everything else fell apart. After reading this book, I value the lifestyle choices that I’m making. I feel that rules and boundaries give definition and meaning to life. What matters is not how you ride the wave, but how you arrive at the shore.
