Sacha Baron Cohen (Misfit Issue, February/March 2005) is currently traversing the country shooting footage for his next mockumentary, Bruno,
about a gay Austrian TV presenter with a certain flair for the dramatic. Like his previous Borat character, he is causing quite a stir with some public officials. Authorities at Wichita’s Mid-Continent Airport were peeved in early April when Cohen’s alter-ego took his clothes off in the terminal. There was also a rumor flying around that Bruno had duped Ben Affleck into giving him an interview without Affleck knowing Bruno’s true identity. On April 2, however, it was reported that Affleck was not, in fact, duped by Cohen, according to Affleck’s representative, Shawn Sachs. Bruno is scheduled to open in theaters this fall. In other Cohen news, a judge has tossed out a defamation lawsuit brought by businessman Jeffrey Lemerond, who is shown in the movie Borat as Cohen chases him down Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue. Federal Judge Loretta Preska said the term “newsworthy” can be applied to the 2006 movie. The lawsuit had sought unspecified damages.
Natalie Portman (Love/Sex, June/July 2005 and Power of Speech, January/February 2008) was recently quoted in the Times of London about why a strong ethnic identity is so important: “I identify very strongly as
Jewish, but I could be Indian, Puerto Rican … Anything that gives you a cultural identity makes you know who you are and grounds you, even as a young girl trying on identities.” In the same interview, Portman also labeled herself and fellow Jewess Scarlett Johansson, her costar in The Other Boleyn Girl, as the “Hot Knishes.”
Portman’s newest movie, My Blueberry Nights, opened in theaters on April 4 to tepid reviews from critics. Co-starring Norah Jones, Jude Law, David Strathairn and Rachel Weisz, the movie is about a young waitress (Jones) who travels along Route 66 to work at various diners, where she meets a unique assortment of individuals. Finally, Portman has a new, 30-second public-service announcement online, where she encourages people to get out and vote. Portman’s non-partisan and unaffiliated spot focuses on the importance of participating in the democratic process. To view the message, click here.
Craig Wedren (Journeys, May/June 2007) recently had his first child with his lovely wife, Meggan, on April 13 in Los Angeles. To send Craig a congratulatory wish, leave a message on his MySpace page.
Mila Kunis’ (Personal Satisfaction, November/December 2005) new movie, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, was released in theaters on April
18. The movie stars Jason Segel (best known as “Marshall” from How I Met Your Mother) as Peter, the loyal and adoring boyfriend of Sarah (Kristen Bell), who has his heart ripped from his chest when she unceremoniously dumps him for a trendy rock star. After wallowing in his own misery for several months, Peter decides to take a trip to Hawaii to cheer himself up. Those dreams are dashed, though, when he finds out Sarah and her boy toy are staying at the same hotel. But things aren’t so bad once he starts dating one of the resort’s employees, played by Kunis. Check out the trailer for the movie and the official website here.
