Did you know our country actually has more than just two political parties? That’s right—not only can Americans vote Democrat or Republican, we can instead choose to register with one of 10 third parties in 2008. Here’s the scoop on who’s running under these party affiliations.

Boston Tea Party

Former boxing manager Charles Jay was selected as the presidential nominee at an online convention in June. Blogger and political activist Thomas L. Knapp is the vice-presidential nominee.

Constitution Party

Pastor and conservative political activist Chuck Baldwin was nominated for president at the national convention in April. Attorney and political activist Darrell Castle was nominated for vice president.

Green Party

Former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney was nominated at the July convention to run as president, and Rosa Clemente was chosen as the vice-presidential nominee. 

Independents
Independent candidates don’t run for a particular party and are already candidates for the 2008 election, without having to run in a primary. As of press time, presidential candidates included John Taylor Bowles, Alan Keyes, Ralph Nader and Kelcey Wilson.

Libertarian Party

Former congressman and U.S. attorney Bob Barr was selected as the presidential nominee in May. His vice-presidential running mate is businessman Wayne Allyn Root. 

New American Independent Party

Businessman Frank McEnulty was nominated for president in March. 

Party for Socialism and Liberation

Socialist Gloria La Riva was nominated for president in January. Her vice-presidential running mate is anti-war activist Eugene Puryear. 

Prohibition Party

Minister Gene Amondson was nominated for president by his party at the national convention last September. The vice-presidential nominee is activist Leroy Pletten. 

Socialist Party USA

Anti-war activist Brian Moore secured his party’s nomination for president last October at the national convention. His running mate, vice-presidential nominee Stewart Alexander, is a political activist. 

Socialist Workers Party
Party leader Roger Calero is running for president, and political activist Alyson Kennedy is the vice-presidential nominee.
